Iran-led shipping firm nears collapse due to sanctions

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - An Iranian-led shipping venture is close to collapse after struggling to steer its oil tankers and dry bulk vessels past tightening Western sanctions, a senior company official said on Thursday.

Negotiations are underway between partners Shipping Corp of India and the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) on how to split the fleet and assets of Irano Hind Shipping, and whether the nearly 40-year-old joint venture will be shut down or not.

Western sanctions aimed at pressuring Tehran to halt its disputed nuclear program prohibit U.S. and European companies from doing business with Irano Hind Shipping due to its links with state-owned IRISL.

"Under the sanctions, we were finding it more and more difficult to employ these ships. So the decision was to split the assets," SCI's Chairman S. Hajara told Reuters by phone from Germany.

"Nothing has been settled yet on what will happen to the company. We are still working on it."

He said the assets of the venture, which includes four crude oil tankers and four dry bulk carriers, would be split according to the shares held by the parent companies. India's largest shipping firm, SCI, owns a 49 percent stake in the venture, while IRISL holds the remaining 51 percent.

The break-up is unlikely to have much of an impact for SCI nor IRISL, analysts said.

"Irano Hind was more of a political baby. The sanctions have in a way helped to discontinue it," said Shashank Kulkarni, secretary general of Indian Private Ports and Terminals Association.

"Business wise it didn't matter much to Shipping Corp of India."

SCI joins other Indian companies trying to distance themselves from Tehran. Indian refiners have cut oil purchases from Iran by more than a fifth, enough to win a waiver from U.S. financial sanctions.

Nice question! This is a form of cancer that grabs my interest immediately it's mentioned. I'm so much interested in it because it runs in my family. My great-grandfather suffered it. My grandfather got his prostate removed in 1990. Two of my granny's brothers has already done a prostate removal surgery called called prostatectomy. It reoccured in one of them and he has since succumbed to it.

Prostate is only found in men. It functions to nourish the sperm. It is the only organ that continues to grow throughout life. Its diseases can be prostatitis, benign prostatic hypertrophy, prostate cancer, etc. Prostate cancer is a disease of the elderly. It occurs in mostly people that are 50 and above. Though it might occur much earlier. Its symptom can vary. But some of the important ones are hematuria, waist pain, constipation, urinary incontinence, weight loss or even dysuria, urgency, terminal dribbling, frequency, weak stream, etc. Its symptom is related to its degree of spread.
It can be detected early, and when this is done, surgeons aims for a cure. Some investigative modalities like Prostate Specific Antigen(PSA) can predict the transformation in the prostate. The result of the PSA will guide the surgeon on whether to perform biopsy. The treatment is often called radical prostatectomy. Again the choice of the surgery is determined by the degree of spread of the cancer.
In late stage presentation, surgeons aims at palliation. This involves the removal of the influences that aids the growth and the spread of the cancer. Prostate cancer is the enlargement of the prostate - a walnut-size organ in every male. Men of black origin are of higher risk and should start prostate exams from about age 40. The thing is it's not just risky se.xual behaviour, you can still get hpv just by sleeping with one person.----(Mistaken)Most sexu.ally active people will get it at one point in their lifetime.

For the contraceptive pill, it says you are at a higher risk of getting cancer(I think cervical cancer) using it for more than 5years but it also says it reduces your chance of getting cancer(I think bosom cancer).

I don't know whether they have the hpv vaccination in Nigeria.

I lost my younger brother (Graduate) aged 24 on May 2, 2012 to Leukaemia (cancer that affects the blood cells). The strange thing was that he never manifested any of the symptons listed except for his loss of weight, bleedin gums (which we attributed to his regular visit to his Dentist). But aside from these, he looked ok.
The only treatment is God's factor and early diagnosis cos if its too late you are a dead man walking.

Skydiver "Fearless Felix" Baumgartner has done it again.

On Wednesday, Baumgartner took another stratospheric leap, this time from an altitude of more than 18 miles ? an estimated 96,640 feet, nearly three times higher than cruising jetliners. He landed safely near Roswell, N.M. His top speed was an estimated 536 mph, said Brian Utley, an official observer on site.

It's the second test jump for Baumgartner from such extreme heights and a personal best. He's aiming for a record-breaking jump from 125,000 feet, or 23 miles, in another month. He hopes to go supersonic then, breaking the speed of sound with just his body.

"It has always been a dream of mine," Baumgartner said in a statement following Wednesday's feat. "Only one more step to go."

Longtime record-holder Joe Kittinger jumped from 102,800 feet ? 19.5 miles ? in 1960 for the Air Force. Kittinger monitored Wednesday's dry run from a mini Mission Control in Roswell.

As he did in March, the 43-year-old Austrian ascended alone in an enclosed capsule lifted by a giant helium balloon that took off from Roswell. He wore a full-pressure suit equipped with parachutes and an oxygen supply ? there's virtually no atmosphere that far up.

It took about 1? hours to reach his target altitude. He was in free fall for an estimated three minutes and 48 seconds before opening his parachutes.

"It felt completely different at 90,000 feet," Baumgartner noted. "There is no control when you exit the capsule. There is no way to get stable."

In March, Baumgartner jumped from 71,581 feet, more than 13 miles, saluting before stepping from the capsule. Bad weather earlier this week delayed the second test jump until Wednesday.

NASA is paying close attention to this Red Bull-funded project dubbed Stratos, short for stratosphere. The space agency wants to learn all it can about potential escape systems for future rocketships.

Baumgartner won't come close to space, even on the ultimate jump that's planned for late August or early September. Space officially begins at 100 kilometers, or 62 miles ? more than 328,000 feet.

Baumgartner, a former military parachutist and extreme athlete, has jumped more than 2,500 times from planes and helicopters, as well as from skyscrapers and landmarks, including the 101-story Taipei 101 in Taiwan.

Kittinger, who turns 84 on Friday, was an Air Force captain when he made his historic jump for what was called Project Excelsior. He reached 614 mph on that dive, equivalent to Mach 0.9, just shy of the sound barrier.

Baumgartner expects to accelerate to 690 mph on his final plunge.

How much would repealing Obamacare cost?

Repealing the health care law passed in 2010 and upheld by the Supreme Court in June would increase the federal deficit by $109 billion over 10 years, a new Congressional Budget Office analysis estimates.

The CBO on Tuesday rated the health care repeal bill passed by the House earlier this month and found that "the direct spending and revenue effects of enacting that legislation would cause a net increase in federal budget deficits of $109 billion over the 2013-2022 period." The primary reason for the deficit increase, the report showed, was the repeal of several tax increases within the health care law. While the repeal bill would reduce direct federal spending by $890 billion over that period, it would also slash more than $1 trillion in new taxes.

The House repeal bill, which passed unanimously among Republicans and received support from a handful of Democrats, is not expected to become law under the current Congress.

In a separate analysis, the CBO also measured the impact of the June Supreme Court ruling that struck down parts of the health care law but left core provisions intact, and found that it would save $84 billion because of reduced Medicaid spending.

The CBO estimated in 2011 that the health care law would reduce the federal deficit by $210 billion over 10 years because of the law's revenue increases.

Reduce the amount of red meat that you eat during the course of the day to lower cholesterol and saturated fat intake. Eat small portions of meat surrounding by healthy vegetables, fruit and a piece of high-fiber whole wheat bread. Always cook with skinless, lean cuts of meat.

Speak with family and friends about their diets. Talk with the people who you deem to look the best. Find out what healthy things they do and how they exercise regularly. This will provide you with information you know works, since you can see the results right in front of you.

Do not drink soda. Although the taste is tempting, drinking soda is detrimental to your overall health, as well as your weight loss efforts. When you are looking to diet, aim to set goals that are achievable. If your goal is not realistic, it won?t be met. For instance, if you want to lose 20 pounds, setting yourself a time limit of one month is a recipe for disaster. Set small, attainable weekly goals instead. Look at the trees rather than the forest. Think about your weekly weight loss instead.

Going on vacation doesn?t have to mean a vacation from weight loss. Save money by making low-cal snacks and meals. If you walk whenever you can, you will be burning off excess calories while getting fresh air and saving on cab fare. It is very easy to say: ?Forget about my diet! I want to enjoy myself on vacation! ?, however, you?ll be much more pleased with your decisions if you stay on par with your goals.

Eating healthy while you are traveling is hard. When you are on the road, bring your own snacks and meals and avoid the roadside stops. Pack a cooler and include yogurt, fruit, veggies and granola bars. These are easy-to-pack foods that are great to snack on while you are on the road. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated as well!

A good way to shed weight is by going out for a hike. It?s a calorie burner and nature walk all in one! If you use a lot of energy for the hike, you will burn many more calories.

When you are aiming to lose weight, put some yogurt into the shopping cart. Eat plain or low fat yogurts. Yogurt can be added to a salad by using cucumbers and salt and pepper for a tasty snack. Buy plain Greek yogurt and add your own fresh fruit for a healthier alternative. Yogurt is a great source of calcium if you choose the right products.

It is impossible to get enough of Michelle Williams, and director-writer Sarah Polley?s "Take This Waltz" provides plenty of emotional moments for this enormously gifted actress to chomp onto.

Alas, there?s also a lot of murky character development, uncertain motivations and elliptical dialogue along the way.

Michelle Williams brings genuine emotion to a confounding character in this romantic drama.

Williams plays Margot, a Toronto woman in what seems to be a happy marriage to Lou (Seth Rogen), a cookbook author. Polley depicts the couple as affectionate, if a bit eccentric in displaying it ? they have a little game of joking about the horrifically violent things they would do to one another in the name of love.

Then Margot meets Daniel (Luke Kirby), a rickshaw operator who paints in his spare time. He?s hunky, sensitive and living just across the street. He?s also seemingly available any time Margot is feeling lonely, or emotionally deprived, as Lou labors on his chicken cookbook. And while Margot is never unfaithful to Lou in any physical sense, in her head and heart she?s dangerously close to the boundary line.

As the movie progresses and Margot tries to move on with her normal life ? which includes nights in bed with Lou and daytime outings with his recovering-alcoholic sister, Geraldine (comic Sarah Silverman, in a surprisingly moving performance) ? she becomes an increasingly infuriating character, sending mixed signals to Daniel and to herself. Her dithering, though, isn?t calculated, but a natural outpouring of her confusion between her head and her heart.

Polley, a familiar face as an actress from her childhood days (remember "Avonlea"?) to grown-up roles in Zack Snyder?s "Dawn of the Dead" remake and a slew of indie films, made an assured directorial and screenwriting debut with "Away From Her" (2006), a mature look at a long-married couple (Julie Christie, Gordon Pinsent) dealing with her encroaching Alzheimer?s.

This time around, she strives to show her characters in completely unromanticized settings (such as the women?s locker-room shower where Margot and Geraldine talk about their lives while completely naked, along with a group of obese elderly swimmers). But, too often, Polley lets her oblique dialogue and self-consciously arty compositions get the better of her.

Williams pulls "Take This Waltz" back from the brink, capturing Margot?s insecurity and her need for love with subtle gestures and her infinitely expressive face. She manages the tough trick of making Margot?s inaction seem fascinating.

Venture funding falls 12 percent in 2Q to $7B

NEW YORK (AP) ? Funding for startups fell 12 percent in the April-June period as venture capitalists poured less money into fewer deals than a year earlier. But the number of companies getting funded in the earliest stages of development reached the highest level in more than a decade ? a hopeful sign for the broader economy and an indication that investors are willing to wait for returns.

A report due out Friday says that startup investments slipped to $7 billion in the second quarter, down from $8 billion in the same period a year earlier. The companies getting funded were mainly in the software, Internet, industrial, and energy sectors. There were 898 deals completed during the quarter, down 15 percent from 1,057 a year earlier.

The MoneyTree study was conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association based on data from Thomson Reuters. The study tracked four stages of venture capital funding. Depending on how far along companies are in development, they received either "seed", "early", "expansion" or "later-stage" funding.

Compared with the first quarter, both the amount of VC money and the number of overall deals increased. The April-June quarter saw most early-stage deals completed since the first quarter of 2001, with $2.1 billion going into 410 deals.

"That's really the bread and butter for VCs and hopefully a harbinger for good economic news for the country overall," said Mark Heesen, president of the NVCA. "If we're investing in early stage, that means we have some time and money that we didn't have in the recent past."

Many early-stage companies don't make it. Those that do become big job creators, he added.

Still, there are concerns among venture capitalists. Investments in the life sciences are falling. In the second quarter, venture capital firms poured $696.8 million into biotech startups, less than half of the $1.44 billion they invested a year earlier. Heesen explained that the time it takes a drug to get to market in the U.S. is getting longer ?often more than 10 years. That makes funding difficult, even for patient investors.

Among the study's other notable items:

? Internet companies received the second-highest level of investment in more than a decade, with $1.8 billion going into 261 deals.

? Seed-stage companies received less than half of the funding that they did a year ago, with $199.4 million going into 63 deals. That's down from $422.8 million going into 130 deals.

? Three of top four deals were in the industrial and energy sectors. Electric car maker Fisker Automotive received $147.6 million, Harvest Power, a provider of organic waste management services, got $112 million and fuel cell technology company Bloom Energy, which develops small, natural-gas power generators for offices and factories, received $100 million.

? Pinterest Inc., the popular image-sharing website, tied for third place with $100 million in funding.

? Startups in the expansion stage received a total of $2.62 billion going into 232 deals, down from 272 deals and $2.38 billion a year ago.

? There were 193 later-stage deals during the quarter, totaling $2.09 billion. That's down from 274 deals and $2.97 billion in the second quarter of 2011.

HBT: K-Rod earns shaky save for Brewers

In theory, Francisco Rodriguez should be in line for a lighter workload now that he?s Milwaukee?s closer. Two days in, though, it certainly hasn?t worked that way.

Working for the fourth straight day, Rodriguez walked three and threw 35 pitches on his way to getting a save against the Cardinals in the Brewers? 4-3 win Wednesday.

Rodriguez threw 12 pitches Sunday, 17 Monday and 19 Tuesday before getting the ball in the ninth in a 4-2 game today. He struggled with his control and issued three walks on 3-2 counts, but he was able to get Lance Berkman to line out to left field to end it.

Overall, Rodriguez has thrown 43 2/3 innings, which doesn?t seem excessive by itself. He?s on pace to throw 77 2/3 innings for the season, which would be his high mark since 2004, but only the third highest of his career.

K-Rod, though, has been forced to step it up lately. He?s worked four days in a row twice this month. For the season, he?s made 20 appearances on zero days? rest, leading major league relievers. Detroit?s Jose Valverde is second with 18, followed by five guys with 16.

Fortunately, the Brewers have Thursday off, so they won?t have to worry about the ninth inning tomorrow. I think they should probably give K-Rod an extra day off on Friday after 83 pitches in four days, but that could lead to a difficult choice in the ninth. Making his first appearance since K-Rod replaced him in the closer?s role, John Axford got the win in relief today after getting four outs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Brewers probably wouldn?t want to go back to him in the ninth right away this weekend, but they also don?t want to burn K-Rod out.
