?We Have to Continually Be Jumping Off Cliffs and Developing Our Wings on the Way Down.?

“We Have to Continually Be Jumping Off Cliffs and Developing Our Wings on the Way Down.”Author Kurt Vonnegut knows a thing or two about creativity, and he once said that "We have to continually be jumping off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down." Apart from being a vivid image, it's a great metaphor for taking risks. Sometimes, you need to just jump headfirst into a project, even if you don't know where you're going with it yet. You'll learn as you go, and sometimes that's the best way to get the results you want.

10 Surprising Work from Home Jobs |

When people think of work from home jobs, several ?typical? job types come to mind: customer service, information technology, and blogging just to name a few. But over the last decade,?telecommuting jobs?have grown 41%, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and the variety of jobs that can be done from home is quite surprising.

Here are ten real work from home jobs that you may not have thought about before. And if you don?t see a job that sparks your interest on this list, keep in mind that if your work is mainly done using computers, phones, or other means of remote communication, it can probably be done from home too.

Registered Nurse Clinical Case Manager?- Nursing jobs are a growing telecommuting option and in this role, the job seeker would be responsible for assessing the health of insurance program members and providing care planning activities and services.

High School Teacher?- Virtual high schools, both public and alternative, have grown leaps and bounds over the last few years. Certified teachers in subjects like English, Spanish, Science, Sociology, Special Education, and even Physical Education are needed to fill a large number of rolls.

Principal Scientist?- No longer are scientists confined to laboratories. With advancements in technology, scientists can now find work from home jobs where they?ll analyze clinical data, design components, train staff, review documentation and attend client meetings.

Independent Filmmaker?- Content websites are increasingly turning to short videos to capture readers? attention. Experienced independent filmmakers can find flexible schedule positions working remotely producing short films on a variety of topics.

Legal Advocacy Counsel?- Depending on one?s specialized legal area of expertise, lawyers can find telecommuting jobs where they?ll provide legal research, writing, and consultations for organizations and companies, all from the comfort of a home office.

Medical Director?- For those with medical or veterinary doctorate degrees, organizations are hiring telecommuting medical directors. These roles entail managing direct reports in the field, producing reports, and providing training.

Government Manager?- Federal government departments and agencies have been increasing their telecommuting opportunities over the last two years. Professionals interested in working for the U.S. government can find jobs in the Federal Highway Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, and others. Job titles include Senior Counsel, Program Manager, Analyst, Transportation Specialist, and Director.

Translation and Subtitler?- If you have the ability to speak and write in multiple languages, plenty of telecommuting jobs exist for you. Film and video companies need people to translate foreign language films into English and to write subtitles, as do publishers and websites. Fluency is required for this work from home job.

Personal Historian?- The popularity of family history research has grown into its own industry. For people who love speaking with people, doing historical research, and recording personal stories, telecommuting personal historian jobs are an excellent choice.

Therapist?- Licensed clinical social workers and psychologists can find work-from-home jobs counseling clients. Rather than a traditional office setting, telecommuting therapists use video chat and phone to communicate with and assist clients.

If you?ve been interested in working from home but aren?t sure if your career field translates into a telecommuting role, you?re in luck. As technology advances and employers continue to discover the perks of hiring telecommuting employees, more and more career fields will become telecommute-eligible.

Brie Weiler Reynolds wrote this guest post. She?s the Content and Social Media Director at?FlexJobs, the award-winning site for telecommuting and flexible job listings, and a former career advisor. At FlexJobs, Brie offers job seekers career and work-life balance advice through the?FlexJobs Blog?and social media.

Wave of attacks in Iraq kills at least 30 people

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Officials say a wave of bombings in two Shiite Iraqi cities south of Baghdad has killed at least 30 people and wounded up to 110 others.

The deadliest of Thursday's attacks was in the city of Hillah where a police officer said back-to-back explosions in a busy commercial area killed 24 people and wounded up to 90. He says the attack started with a roadside bombing that was followed by a car bomb explosion when rescuers rushed to the scene.

Another police officer says a car bomb blast at the gates of the nearby city of Karbala killed six people and wounded 20 just hours earlier.

Two health officials confirmed the causality figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.

Game Console Fatigue | Chris' Musings

Now that Nintendo has come out with the Wii U, I have had to think about whether or not to buy that new console. It did not take long to decide that I would not. You see, even though we have all three game consoles, we do not use them much at all.

We used the Wii quite a bit when it first came out, and then again when Mario Galaxy came out. But I would say that it has been months since it was last turned on; and probably that was just done to upgrade the firmware. I am not sure that I can even remember how the home theatre system is supposed to be configured for us to play with it.

Our XBox360 does not see much use either. The last time I turned it on was to make sure that it could connect to our new wireless router. And besides my son playing games on it when he comes over, the only time it sees any use is when the family decides to play Rock Band, otherwise it just sits there unused.

The PS3 is the console that sees the most use, but not for playing games. We use it as our Bluray player, and also to watch TV programs and movies on Netflix. I did buy games for it, but I basically never play them.

So a new console system would have to make a very compelling argument before we would consider buying it since the only thing we do on any of them is watch movies and TV programs.

My wife plays games on her iPad and on her 3DSXL, and I play games on my iPad and WOW on my laptops.

What kind of use do you get out of your game console(s)?

Goodnight

I am a baby-boomer who is now in his second career after spending 10 years in the military. I now work in the computer field, which also happens to be one of my hobbies. I also like to sing, play the guitar to accompany my singing, and play the piano when I practice (which is pretty much never these days) This entry was posted in Entertainment, Family, Games and tagged 3DS, game consoles, iPad, Microsoft, NaBloPoMo, netflix, nintendo, ps3, sony, Wii, WiiU, xbox360. Solo puts focus on soccer, not personal life

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? Hope Solo diffused the drama surrounding her personal life as the gold medal-winning U.S. women's soccer team prepared for an exhibition match against Ireland.

"My life is great," the goalkeeper said. "My life is happy."

Solo made her first appearance with the national team since she was married to former NFL tight end Jerramy Stevens in Washington state on Nov. 13, a day after his arrest at a party for domestic violence. A judge determined there wasn't enough evidence to hold Stevens, but the matter remained under investigation.

Solo spoke after a workout with her fellow U.S. teammates at Portland's downtown Jeld-Wen Field. The national team plays Ireland on Wednesday night on its U.S. appreciation tour following a 2-1 victory over Japan in the final match at the London Games.

"It's unfortunate what the media can do to judge before the facts are out there. It's hard to see, but it's a hard truth, and it's part of life," she said. "I'm happy. I'm happily married. I would never stand for domestic violence. I've never been hit in my life."

Solo has had a stellar career with the national team, helping the team to two straight Olympic gold medals. But she's never shied from attention: From her Twitter criticism of former national team member Brandi Chastain during the London Games to appearing on TV's "Dancing with the Stars."

Police say that they were called to a disturbance at a home in Kirkland, a Seattle suburb, in the early morning hours on Nov. 12. Solo and her brother blamed a disturbance on three unknown men. Officers maintained they had probable cause to arrest Stevens because they observed evidence of an altercation, including a cut on Solo's elbow, and his admission that the two had argued, according to court documents.

The next day, Solo and Steven were married. Solo, 31, posted a smiling photo of herself with Stevens, 33, to Twitter two days later.

Stevens was selected with the No. 28 pick of the 2002 draft by the Seahawks after a stellar career at Washington. But he also was involved in incidents away from football that included reckless driving charges for crashing into a nursing home.

His best season with the Seahawks as in 2005 when he started a career-high 12 games and had 45 receptions as the Seahawks won the NFC championship.

Solo also went to Washington. The two started dating following the London Games.

"Like I said, we're happy, and ultimately that's all that matters," she said.

Wednesday's match is the sixth of the U.S. team's Fan Tribute Tour.

Jill Ellis, women's development director for U.S. soccer, is coaching the U.S. team against Ireland. Former Australian national team coach Tom Sermanni takes over the national team in January, replacing Olympic coach Pia Sundhage, who stepped down.

Ireland and the United States will play again in Glendale, Ariz., on Dec. 1 as the tour continues.

Top Signs of Foundation Trouble | Home and Garden

Homeowners know that a home is a major investment and that taking care of the home is very important not only to protect that investment but also to ensure a safe place for you and your family to live in. One of the most important aspects of taking care of any home is making sure that the home rests on a solid foundation. As such, it is important to be aware of possible foundation problems and to ensure that you monitor for problems and call in a professional as soon as you see a possible issue.

Signs of Foundation Trouble

Sometimes, a foundation problem is obvious such as when a large crack develops in the walls of your basement. However, there can also be other signs that your foundation is having issues that may not be as obvious. Knowing what to look for is important, and here are a few signs of trouble with your foundation that you should be aware of and pay attention to:

1. Sloping or uneven floors in the basement. This can be a sign that the walls and basement floor are starting to separate or pull away from each other. It is a serious issue and one you should deal with promptly by calling in a foundation repair expert.

2. Cracks or shifts in your crown molding. Crown molding is molding between your sealing and your wall. If your crown molding begins to pull away at the sides (i.e. in corners or where two pieces meet) this is a sign that your home is shifting and your foundation might be in trouble. This is especially true if the crack begins in the wall and continues up into the molding.

3. Cracks or gaps between the walls and ceiling. If your home does not have crown molding, then you may notice gaps developing between the wall and ceiling. This, too, is a sign that the foundation of your home is shifting and that your foundation needs attention.

4. Cracks on your home?s exterior in the brickwork, or the walls separating form your home. This is an extremely serious sign of foundation problems and it means that you must contact an expert right away to preserve the structural integrity of your home.

5. Separation at the windows, doors or garage door. Essentially, like most of the other signs, shifting and pulling away of parts of your home that used to be tight are all indicators that your home?s foundation is beginning to develop problems.

6. Inability to tightly or properly close windows and doors. If your foundation begins to sink, door frames may begin to sag and you may be unable to properly open or close doors. Likewise, a sagging or shifting foundation can cause your windows and doors to become out-of-square and more difficult to open or close.

If you begin to notice any of these issues with your foundation, it is very important that you contact an expert. The longer you wait, the worse the problems in your home may become and the more expensive it may be to fix all of the issues that have developed due to your sagging, shifting or damaged foundation. Don?t hesitate to take action. With the right expert, you may be able to find a simple and easy solution to your foundation issues.

Nokia sues RIM for breach of contract

(AP) ? Nokia Corp. said Wednesday that it is suing Research In Motion, the maker of the BlackBerry, for breach of contract in Britain, the United States and Canada over cellular patents the two companies agreed on nine years ago.

The struggling Finnish cellphone maker agreed with RIM in 2003 on a license that covers patents on "standards-essential" technologies for mobile devices. RIM has since claimed the license should also have covered patents for non-essential parts and it filed arbitration proceedings with the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce in March 2011.

Earlier this month, the Arbitration Institute of Stockholm Chamber of Commerce ruled against RIM's claims.

Nokia said it filed a suit earlier this week to enforce the tribunal's ruling, which says that the Canadian company is "not entitled to manufacture or sell products compatible with the WLAN Standard without first agreeing with Nokia on the royalty to be paid."

RIM said it "will respond to Nokia's petitions in due course."

"Research In Motion has worked hard to develop its leading-edge BlackBerry technology and has built an industry-leading intellectual property portfolio of its own," said RIM spokeswoman Crystal Roberts.

Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies in New York, said Nokia's filings mean that RIM likely will end up paying royalties of $2 to $5 per phone.

Nokia is among leading patent holders in the wireless industry. Major manufacturers of phones and wireless equipment are increasingly turning to patent litigation as they jockey for an edge to expand their share of the rapidly growing smartphone market.

Last year, Nokia received a $565 million royalty payment from Apple Inc. to settle long-standing patent disputes. It also has filed claims in the United States and Germany alleging that products from HTC Corp. and Viewsonic Corp. infringe a number of its patents.

Nokia shares closed down 1 percent at ?2.53 in Helsinki on Wednesday.

Collinsville To Allow Video Gaming Machines | FOX2now.com ? St ...

COLLINSVILLE, IL (KTVI) ? The Collinsville City Council voted to allow video gaming machines in the area?s bars and taverns, despite one councilwoman?s opposition.

?I?m not going to go into all the reasons why I don?t support this,? Nancy Moss said.

Before the 3-1 vote was even taken, she told the council she expected to give the ?only ?no? vote?.

?I?ve said at all the meetings we?ve had I believe it is not in the best interest of our citizens,? she explained. ?It carries so many ? I believe ? impacts on our community.?

But, the council would not be able to vote on the measure if citizens had not allowed the vote in the November general election.? Moss said the ballot language was confusing.? The language reads:? ?Should video gaming be prohibited in the City of Collinsville??

?At this point, it?s moot as to whether people meant to vote for it,? Moss admitted.? But, she cited one voter?s email.? ?It was very ?unusual? ? is what he called it ? to ask a question in the negative and require a positive response in the vote.

With a 56% ?no? vote, video gaming was allowed in Collinsville.? By contrast, the language for Glen Carbon voters read:? ?Should video gaming be permitted in the Village of Glen Carbon??? With a 57% ?no? vote, the video gaming proposal died at the ballot box.

Councilmen went on to amend the Offenses Against Public Decency ordinance.? The amendment would allow video gambling in Collinsville as long as the machines only operated in businesses that had liquor licenses and served no food.? The council also approved licensing fees for the games.

$250 / year for license stickers on each machine in each business.

$500 / year licensing fee to be paid by the business to operate all the machines.

$1,000 / year licensing fee to be paid by the company that installs and operates the machines.

$2,000 / year licensing fee for manufacturers, suppliers or distributors of the machines, if those companies are located in the City of Collinsville.

25% of game revenue will go to the state.

5% goes to the city.

35% goes to the bar owner

35% goes to the machine owner.

Polycom HDX Series ? Microphone (Clink2) Cable Pin-Out

Problem:

Client needs help with pin-out / wiring diagram for the Clink2 Crossover Cable to make their own version of p/n: (25 ft.) 2200-24009-001, (50 ft.) 2200-24008-001, (100 ft.) 2200-24010-001

Solution:

To build a custom Conference Link2 cable, use shielded CAT5e or better, and terminate both end connectors (P1 and P2) with standard 8P8C plugs (for example, RJ45) using the wiring connections shown below. The maximum length for this cable is 100 feet (30 m). Note that this cable provides a crossover connection between pins 1 and 2 and pins 5 and 6.

Note: HDX 6000, 7000, 8000 require the use of a Walta (M) to RJ45 (F) adapter (p/n: 2457-25646-001) on each end of this cable to connect from the HDX to the Polycom Microphone Pod.

The shield drain wire should tie to pin 3

?

?

The pin 3 connection straight-thru is VERY important (one could say critical) as it sets the ground reference for the clocking signals passed on the other signal pairs (1,2 and 5,6). Without it, the cable/system stops working at lengths greater than about 25 feet.

On Polycom-supplied cables, that pin-3 is also tied to the shield of the RJ45 connector? but it?s almost impossible to do that with the drain wire and not cause an intermittent short.? So field terminations can be with the drain wire connected to the metal shield of the RJ45 connector and an unused wire pair (perhaps blue/white?)?connected to pin-3 straight thru.

Feds charge Intrade with illegally allowing bets

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. regulators on Monday sued Intrade, the online prediction market that gained popularity as an informal oddsmaker for the presidential election, saying it illegally let customers bet on future economic data, the price of gold and even acts of war.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission said in a complaint in federal court that Intrade and its operator solicited customers to trade investment contracts that technically are options. Options must be traded on approved, regulated exchanges.

"Today's action should make it clear that we will intervene in the 'prediction' markets, wherever they may be based, when their U.S. activities violate" laws and rules enforced by the agency, CFTC enforcement director David Meister said in a statement.

By requiring that options be traded on approved exchanges, Meister said, regulators can "police market activity and protect market integrity."

Intrade did not respond to an emailed request for comment.

It was unclear whether regulators believe that all trades on Intrade by U.S. investors are illegal. The CFTC said it would not comment further because the matter was in litigation.

Intrade is known for facilitating bets on award shows, weather and other high-profile events. The prices at which customers are willing to make those bets are cited as informal odds. TEN also used to allow betting on sports through other sites that it operated.

For example, on Monday the site gave "Argo" a 28.5 percent chance of winning the Oscar for best picture and assigned a 19 percent chance that the United States or Israel would launch an airstrike against Iran by June 30.

The CFTC oversees markets for futures and options, investments that allow people to bet on the future prices of commodities like grain and oil. Those contracts help farms, airlines and other businesses to protect themselves against unexpected price swings.

In the complaint, the CFTC alleged that Intrade, based in Ireland, had illegally solicited everyday U.S. investors to use the website between September 2007 and June 25 of this year.

Intrade and its operator, Trade Exchange Network Ltd., falsely claimed in annual reports that the contracts were not being sold to ordinary U.S. customers, the CFTC said. Regulators want the companies to pay fines and return profits that were obtained illegally. They want the site and its operators barred from any future activities related to options trading.

Intrade users reported on Twitter that the site already blocks them from trading contracts related to the prices of oil and gold.

One of them, Joe Schilling, posted an image of an email he said was sent by Intrade in 2009, stating that crude oil and gold contracts were unavailable to U.S. users "due to a regulatory request" from the CFTC.

TEN settled similar charges of soliciting U.S. investors in 2005. In an order filed with that settlement, the CFTC said that U.S. customers accounted for up to 40 percent of Intrade's total customer base. TEN paid $150,000 and agreed to halt further violations.

Under the settlement, TEN agreed to use pop-up windows to tell U.S. customers which bets were not available to them. It said it would cooperate in any future investigations.

Monday's complaint includes charges that TEN violated that earlier settlement. The company used Intrade to offer illegal options including on the future prices of gold, changes in the unemployment rate and a measure of U.S. economic output, the complaint said. It said TEN failed to provide the pop-up notices mandated in the 2005 order.

Top Ten Classic Board Games ? All About Fun and Games

The following top ten classic board games continue to entertain families year after year. Most people remember playing the games when they were younger and are now playing the games with their own children or grandchildren. If they are not currently in your game closet, you may want to consider adding them and plan on having a classic family game night.

Monopoly is one of the most popular classic board games. Although one of the longest games to finish, families still love it. The game doesn?t always have to be completely played out in order to have fun. Moving around the board, with the famous Monopoly game tokens, provides players the opportunities to invest in real estate and build massive land assets. The game is a thrill for anyone. If having a classic family game night, Monopoly Tarts can be served while playing.
(recommended for 2-8 players (best with at least 3),for ages 8 and up, about 180 minutes or more to play)

Life by Milton Bradley brings the various choices of life to the game table. Choosing a career, getting married, buying a house, having children, and events that may happen in real life, is played out on the path on the Life game board. Families enjoy the different predicaments the board presents. What a life!
(recommended for 2-6 players, for ages 6 and up, about 60 minutes or less to play)

Sorry has provided families with an exciting race game with strategic fun. Sorry includes drawing cards and deciding which pawn is best to move in order to be the first player to reach back home. Returning another player back to start, and saying, ?Sorry?, makes the game of Sorry a classic.
(recommended for 2-4 players, for ages 6 and up, about 30 minutes to play)

Mousetrap is a unique board game where everyone enjoys building an elaborate Mousetrap together, and then loves to watch the chain reaction at the end. The winner of the game is the last mouse who avoids being caught in the Mousetrap. Not knowing whether the contraption will catch a player?s mouse offers a suspenseful and entertaining time.
(recommended for 2-4 players, for ages 6 and up, about 30 minutes to play)

Clue challenges all players to try and deduce who killed Mr. Boddy, where? and with what? While moving around the game board mansion, players are able to ask other players questions to figure the mystery out!
(recommended for 3-6 players, for ages 8 and up, about 45 minutes to play)

Risk is another long, but popular board game to play. Players enjoy battling others for world domination. Although the roll of the dice determines who wins a battle, strategy in when to Risk, where, and how much, determines the winner just as much. This balance of chance and strategy makes Risk an exciting game for a family game night.
(recommended for 2-6 players (best with at least 3 or more), for ages 10 and up, about 120 minutes to play)

The mission for the game, Stratego, is for a player to protect his flag while trying to discover and capture his opponent?s flag. Players begin by secretly placing their ?armies? onto the board. With bombs, a spy, and other army men of different ranks, players strategically move into enemy territory in order to capture the enemy?s flag. Careful moving is a must!
(recommended for 2 players, for ages 8 and up, about 30 minutes to play)

Scrabble is one of the most classic word games of all time. Players strive to gain as many points as possible by placing words, formed from their 7 tiles, onto the Scrabble game board. Different points, based on positions of the board and the commonality of letters used, determines a player?s score.
(recommended for 2-4 players, for ages 10 and up, about 90 minutes to play)

Connect Four uses a durable, doublesided, stand to drop ?checker-like? pieces into any of the 7 slots. The first player to succeed in getting 4 of his pieces in a row (diagonally, horizontally, or vertically) wins. Quick to play, but a great game for families of all ages to enjoy.
(recommended for 2 players, for ages 6 and up, about 10 minutes to play)

If you have young children, Candyland would be a classic game to add to the game closet. However, if not, Battleship, Twister, Yahtzee, Chess, Checkers, Chinese Checkers or Backgammon are classic games to own.

It is really difficult to narrow down the classic games. There are so many and they are all wonderful to play! If you were to walk the game aisle of any large discount store (like Walmart), the above listed games are sure to be seen. They are remembered as favorite games by many, and continually provide entertainment and fun for families.

One of my favorite games, Senet, is over 5000 years old. The oldest game, listed above, is Monopoly which was first published in 1933. It would seem the top ten classic games have thousands of years to go before they even begin to lose their sense of appeal.

China's Wenzhou unveils reform plans as bad loans climb

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's entrepreneurial hub of Wenzhou has unveiled measures to turn grey-market lending into formal credit to support cash- starved small firms while reducing financial risks, state media reported on Saturday.

Under the plans announced by the municipal government, the wealthy coastal city of Wenzhou, aims to channel private money into local businesses through formal institutions - mainly small credit firms, the official Securities Times said, citing officials.

These credit firms will be allowed to issue bonds via private placements while qualified credit firms could be turned into rural banks, the newspaper quoted Zhang Zhenyu, head of the municipal government's finance office, as saying.

Wenzhou, in eastern Zhejiang province, is known throughout China as a Mecca for private entrepreneurship and grey-market lending.

A string of bankruptcies last year - which spawned suicides and disappearances by entrepreneurs unable to repay high-interest loans - prompted a visit by Premier Wen Jiabao and a decision to bring underground financing out of the shadows.

In March, China's cabinet approved the launch of a financial reform pilot project in the city, which it hoped to replicate across the country later to tame the underground lending market where interest rates can reach 100 percent.

Several Wenzhou-based companies have submitted applications to national regulators to set up rural banks, trusts as well as insurance and securities firms, the Securities Times said.

The city will also develop specialized asset management companies and provide support for major projects through asset securitization and bill issuance.

"(But) regulator departments will be very strict in approving new financial institutions. The financial reform won't be done overnight," the newspaper quoted Zhang as saying.

The city will publish an index to track changes in local borrowing costs as early as this month, Zhang said.

Some 30 small loan firms have already registered with the government since March, with total registered capital of more than 8 billion yuan ($1.28 billion), according to state media.

A surge in bad loans in Wenzhou has highlighted difficulties facing the free wheeling city, as private firms cannot get enough loans from state-owned banks while exporters are struggling to cope with weak demand and soaring wages.

The average non-performing loan ratio at banks in Wenzhou reached 3 percent by the end of August - the highest level in at least a decade, according to local media.

Wenzhou is awaiting cabinet approval to allow the city's residents to make direct overseas investments in yuan, the newspaper quoted Wu Guolian, head of the local branch of the People's Bank of China, as saying. Such a move would be a big step towards liberalizing capital account transactions.

China's premier-in-waiting Li Keqiang said this week that the country must embrace market-based reforms to help sustain economic growth.

Three Essential Tips On Growing Mushrooms At Home

Three Essential Tips on Growing Mushrooms at Home

Growing your own mushrooms can be a lot of fun and provide you with a new hobby that can help you save money and enhance your cooking skills.

There are three basic types of prerequisites that you should be familiar with. To start with you will require the "do' s", the beneficial aspect, what you should do. To ensure success, you must realize what has to be executed to ensure your success in growing mushrooms at home.

Second would be the "don't s", the detrimental, need-to-avoid aspect. You should also know everything you need to protect against and what to avoid. To maintain from destroying or reducing your ability to succeed, you will have to know this, therefore you specifically want to ensure you never fail outright.

So then let's have a look at three of the "do' s" and three of the "don't s" of growing mushrooms at home:

First "Do": Make sure to research everything about the right growing conditions for your type of mushroom you plan on growing. The reasons behind this are because each of the different types of mushroom species have specific growing conditions regarding their light and temperature requirements, and also they may require certain types of substrate or casings to allow the mushrooms to fruit properly.

First "Don't": Forget to use very sterile conditions when setting up your substrate. This implies learning how to use sterile techniques when inoculating your mushrooms because the results can be detrimental if you fail to do so.

Second "Do": Make sure you have all of the proper equipment for growing mushrooms in your home. You have to make sure to provide a consistent environment for your mushrooms to thrive.

Second "Don't": Use low quality ingredients for your substrate. Instead you should make sure to use high quality nutrients for your mushrooms, to get the best tasting mushrooms.

Third "Do": Learn the proper techniques for making a good quality spore print. You really need to use this since you will want to continue to keep growing mushrooms in your home. And also, be able to keep the highest quality mushrooms while being able to save money by growing them in your house.

Third "Don't: Allow the substrate to get too old or dry out while you are growing mushrooms. You need to remember that the substrate conditions must be keep moist, but not over saturated to allow the mushrooms to fruit. You can give your mushrooms the most optimal conditions by using a mushroom grow kit.

You will certainly improve your chances for being successful and greatly lower the probability of failure in growing mushrooms at home. All you need to do is to pay attention to the "do' s" and "don't s" defined above. Make sure to do the all of the "do' s" and avoid all of the "don't s! Violence in cities; Mubarak deja vu?

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi's decision to assume sweeping powers caused fury amongst his opponents and prompted violent clashes in central Cairo and other cities on Friday.

Police fired tear gas near Cairo's Tahrir Square, heart of the 2011 uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak, where thousands demanded Mursi quit and accused him of launching a "coup". Angry youth hurled rocks at security forces and burned a police truck.

There were also violent protests in Alexandria, Port Said and Suez.

Opponents accused Mursi, who on Thursday issued a decree that puts his decisions above legal challenge until a new parliament is elected, of being the new Mubarak and hijacking the revolution.

"The people want to bring down the regime," shouted protesters in Tahrir, echoing a chant used in the uprising that forced Mubarak to step down. "Get out, Mursi," they chanted, along with "Mubarak tell Mursi, jail comes after the throne."

The United States, the European Union and the United Nations expressed concern at Mursi's move.

Mursi's aides said the presidential decree was intended to speed up a protracted transition that has been hindered by legal obstacles but Mursi's rivals condemned him as an autocratic pharaoh who wanted to impose his Islamist vision on Egypt.

"I am for all Egyptians. I will not be biased against any son of Egypt," Mursi said on a stage outside the presidential palace, adding that he was working for social and economic stability and the rotation of power.

"Opposition in Egypt does not worry me, but it has to be real and strong," he said, seeking to placate his critics and telling Egyptians that he was committed to the revolution. "Go forward, always forward ... to a new Egypt."

Buoyed by accolades from around the world for mediating a truce between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip, Mursi on Thursday ordered that an Islamist-dominated assembly writing the new constitution could not be dissolved by legal challenges.

"Mursi a 'temporary' dictator," was the headline in the independent daily Al-Masry Al-Youm.

Mursi, an Islamist whose roots are in the Muslim Brotherhood, also gave himself wide powers that allowed him to sack the unpopular general prosecutor and opened the door for a retrial for Mubarak and his aides.

The president's decree aimed to end the logjam and push Egypt, the Arab world's most populous nation, more quickly along its democratic path, the presidential spokesman said.

"President Mursi said we must go out of the bottleneck without breaking the bottle," Yasser Ali told Reuters.

TURBULENCE AND TURMOIL

The president's decree said any decrees he issued while no parliament sat could not be challenged, moves that consolidated his power but look set to polarize Egypt further, threatening more turbulence in a nation at the heart of the Arab Spring.

The turmoil has weighed heavily on Egypt's faltering economy that was thrown a lifeline this week when a preliminary deal was reached with the International Monetary Fund for a $4.8 billion loan. But it also means unpopular economic measures.

In Alexandria, north of Cairo, protesters ransacked an office of the Brotherhood's political party, burning books and chairs in the street. Supporters of Mursi and opponents clashed elsewhere in the city, leaving 12 injured.

A party building was also attacked by stone-throwing protesters in Port Said, and demonstrators in Suez threw petrol bombs that burned banners outside the party building.

Although Washington praised Egypt for its part in bringing Israelis and Palestinians to a ceasefire on Wednesday, it expressed concern about Mursi's move.

"The decisions and declarations announced on November 22 raise concerns for many Egyptians and for the international community," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said in a statement.

The United States has been concerned about the fate of what was once a close ally under Mubarak, who preserved Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel.

The European Union urged Mursi to respect the democratic process, while the United Nations expressed fears about human rights.

"We are very concerned about the possible huge ramifications of this declaration on human rights and the rule of law in Egypt," Rupert Colville, spokesman for the U.N. Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay, said at the United Nations in Geneva.

"ANOTHER DICTATOR"

"The decree is basically a coup on state institutions and the rule of law that is likely to undermine the revolution and the transition to democracy," said Mervat Ahmed, an independent activist in Tahrir protesting against the decree. "I worry Mursi will be another dictator like the one before him."

Leading liberal Mohamed ElBaradei, who joined other politicians on Thursday night to demand the decree was withdrawn, wrote on his Twitter account that Mursi had "usurped all state powers and appointed himself Egypt's new pharaoh".

Almost two years after Mubarak was toppled and about five months since Mursi took office, propelled to the post by the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt has no permanent constitution, which must be in place before new parliamentary elections are held.

The last parliament, which sat for the first time earlier this year, was dissolved after a court declared it void. It was dominated by the Brotherhood's political party.

An assembly drawing up the constitution has yet to complete its work. Many liberals, Christians and others have walked out accusing the Islamists who dominate it of ignoring their voices over the extent that Islam should be enshrined in the new state.

Opponents call for the assembly to be scrapped and remade. Mursi's decree protects the existing one and extends the deadline for drafting a document by two months, pushing it back to February, further delaying a new parliamentary election.

Explaining the rationale behind the moves, the presidential spokesman said: "This means ending the period of constitutional instability to arrive at a state with a written constitution, an elected president and parliament."

"THIS IS NOT THE REMEDY"

Analyst Seif El Din Abdel Fatah said the decree targeted the judiciary which had reversed, for example, an earlier Mursi decision to remove the prosecutor.

Mursi, who is now protected by his new decree from judicial reversals, said the judiciary contained honorable men but said he would uncover corrupt elements. He also said he would ensure independence for the judicial, executive and legislative powers.

Although many of Mursi's opponents also opposed the sacked prosecutor, whom they blamed for shortcomings in prosecuting Mubarak and his aides, and also want judicial reform, they say a draconian presidential decree was not the way to do it.

"There was a disease but this is not the remedy," said Hassan Nafaa, a liberal-minded political science professor and activist at Cairo University.

Savory Science: Jelly Bean Taste Test

The five senses

Introduction
Thanksgiving brings a feast of flavors. But when you imagine the mouthwatering meal?the tang of ruby-red cranberry sauce or sweet, cinnamon-scented pumpkin pie?you might notice that you are combining sensory cues. Clearly the senses work together in your recollection, but how much is taste influenced by other sensory information as you eat? In this activity you'll find out by looking at two senses in particular.

Background
Every time you take a bite of food, receptors in your mouth called taste buds pick up the taste of the food you are eating. These receptors are sensitive to five basic tastes: umami (a savory flavor), salty, sweet, bitter and sour. But right above your mouth is your nose, which also plays a part in how you experience food. The nose is equipped with millions of receptors for odor molecules. You can smell a food by sniffing through your nostrils or if air is circulating inside your nose as you chew. The latter occurs because the back of your throat connects your nose and mouth. The only catch is that air needs to be flowing in or out of your nose for the odor molecules to get into the nose?either through the front or the back. This explains why pinching your nose prevents you from smelling food.

Once they arrive in your nose, odor molecules travel to your nose's olfactory epithelium, the area of the nasal cavity where odor detection occurs. While you are eating, your brain receives signals from both your mouth and nose, allowing you to recognize whatever tasty treat you happen to be chewing. In this activity you'll separate the sensations of taste and smell to learn how much each contributes to your recognition of a familiar food.

Materials
? ?? Jelly beans (at least three different fruit flavors works best)
? ?? Pencil and paper
? ?? Plastic sandwich bags
? ?? A partner. You can also work with a group of friends and compare results
? ?? Blindfold (optional)
? ?? Glasses of water (optional)

Preparation
? ?? Separate your jellybeans by flavor.
? ?? Select at least three plastic bags?one for each flavor you want to use in the experiment. Place a few appropriately flavored jelly beans in each bag. For example, one bag could be for mango jelly beans, another for strawberry and a third for banana-flavored ones. Push down on the bags to smush the candies slightly.

Procedure
? ?? Ask your partner to close his or her eyes (or use a blindfold).
? ?? Give your partner a jelly bean. Ask him or her to chew it and guess its flavor. Record the response, along with the correct answer. Repeat with at least two other flavors. You can offer your subject a glass of water between samples to clean his or her palate. How good is your partner at guessing the bean's flavor?
? ?? Tell your partner to pinch his or her nose shut, then hand your partner a jelly bean. Ask him or her to eat the candy and tell you what flavor he or she tastes. Record the response along with the correct answer.
? ?? Repeat the previous step with one or two other jelly bean flavors?you can offer your subject a sip of water in between each to cleanse his or her palate. Record each response, along with the correct answer. Does being unable to smell change your subject's responses?
? ?? With eyes still shut or blindfolded, ask your partner to breath deeply while you open one of the plastic bags that hold crushed jelly beans. Ask your subject to guess which flavor he or she is smelling?record the response and correct answer. Repeat with the other two bags. Is your subject better at guessing based on taste alone or scent alone?
? ?? Switch roles with your partner or repeat the above with another subject. Is it easy to recognize the jelly bean flavor by taste? By scent? How do your results compare with your partner's?
? ?? Extra: You can also try this on a larger group of people and see whether certain groups are better than others under different conditions. For example, are older people better or worse at guessing the candy's flavor by scent alone?
? ?? Extra: For a healthier variation on this experiment, peel and chop two potatoes and two apples. (Have an adult supervise when you use knives or peelers.) You'll notice the peeled apple and potato slices look very similar. Hand either a slice of apple or potato to a partner?don't let your partner know which is which. Ask your partner to take a bite while keeping his or her nose pinched closed. Can your partner tell the difference between the apple and the potato? Can you? Try again with nose un-pinched.
? ?? Extra: In this experiment, subjects can't see the jelly bean's color, but if you want to check whether vision influences how something tastes, set up a soda-tasting experiment. Get three kinds of fruit soda?such as cherry, grape or orange?and one flavor-free carbonated water. Add a few drops of food coloring to the carbonated water. (Try to use a color that differs from the sodas.) Pour your beverages into glasses and ask subjects to taste each one and name the beverage's flavor. Do subjects mistake the colored water for another fruit soda? Does the color of the water trick people into expecting a soda flavor to match the color?

Benitez coy on long-term prospects at Chelsea

By STEVE DOUGLAS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:59 p.m. ET Nov. 22, 2012

LONDON (AP) -Rafael Benitez is being coy about his chances of staying at Chelsea beyond the end of the season, insisting Thursday that his main ambitions as interim coach were to "win trophies and play good football."

The 52-year-old Spaniard was hired by the European champions on a seven-month contract Wednesday following the abrupt firing of Roberto Di Matteo.

Many believe Benitez is merely a short-term fix ahead of the likely hiring next summer of Pep Guardiola, the reported No.1 target of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

Benitez says "I don't care about the short-term (deal), what I have in my head is to win every game . we will see what happens."

Benitez says he has landed the "perfect" job but hasn't yet spoken to Abramovich.

Washington comes through on senior day

By Doug Roberson

Tevin Washington walked off Grant Field a winner and record-breaker in his final home game as Georgia Tech?s quarterback.

Afterward, he was more focused on the former than the latter after the Yellow Jackets beat Duke 42-24 to keep alive the team?s hopes of playing in the ACC championship game, and set up next week?s in-state showdown at Georgia.

?I could care less about the records,? he said after setting school and conference records career rushing touchdowns by a quarter. ?I just want to get the wins.?

It was a typical? Washington performance: a few big pass plays, a few incompletions and a few hold-your-breath tosses on option plays. Washington rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown and passed for 102 yards and three more scores.

Washington has had a curious place at Tech. His predecessor, Joshua Nesbitt, was beloved by Yellow? Jackets fans because of his toughness and the fact he led Tech to an ACC championship. Washington became the starter when Nesbitt suffered a broken arm in a game at Virginia Tech the next year. He spent most of 2011 and 2012 hearing from fans that he wasn?t as good as Nesbitt, or that they wanted to see more of his backup, Vad Lee.

That came to fruition in last week?s game against North Carolina when Lee came in on the third series in? a planned switch and never left, leading the Jackets to a 68-50 victory. Lee had played sparingly in seven of the previous nine games, so that he played wasn?t a surprise. That he finished the game, and was responsible for 55 points, was a surprise.

Tech stuck to the same quarterback-rotation early against the Blue Devils. Washington played the first two series, leading the Yellow Jackets to two touchdowns.

He scored the first touchdown on a 1-yard run to give the Jackets a 7-0 lead. It was his 18th rushing touchdown this season 36th in his career, breaking the school and ACC record for all-time rushing touchdowns by a quarterback that was previously held by Nesbitt.

Washington said after that he hadn?t seen the list of quarterbacks that he bettered, and that he didn?t plan on doing so until after the season. Nor would he think about how the fans have treated him, saying he doesn?t focus on the negative.

?He?s the epitome of perseverance,? coach Paul Johnson said. ?I couldn?t be happier for him.?

Washington followed that on the second series by making the right read on an option play. He handed the ball to B-back David Sims, who sprinted up the middle for a 19-yard touchdown to give the Jackets a 14-7 lead.

Lee came on and played the next two series in the first half, adding a touchdown.

Washington was re-inserted in the second half and this time he never left.

He followed his first two touchdown drives with three more that showed his development as a passer.

First, he hit B-back Zach Laskey, who came out of the backfield and got behind the secondary, with a lofted pass with just the right amount of touch for a 28-yard score that gave the Jackets a 28-17 lead. The preceding play illustrated why Washington drives some fans crazy. Rolling right on an option play, Washington put a Duke defender to the ground by faking a pitch to a trailing A-back. Washington kept going and then pitched the ball forward, resulting in an illegal forward pass because he had already crossed the line of scrimmage. He rebounded with the touchdown pass.

He followed that with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Robbie Godhigh on a crossing route and capped it with a second touchdown pass to Godhigh.

Washington came out for the last series, which was nothing more than kneel downs. He snapped the final play and tried to keep the game ball. A team manager came and took it.

Washington didn?t seem to care. He doesn?t want the ball or the records. He wants the wins.

?It goes back to something we?ve always talked about it: it?s now how you start it?s how you finish,? he said. ?We still have a chance to accomplish all of our goals on our goal board.?
